Issue No. 46 published on 31-08-2007
SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2007
Your favourite Family magazine is back. I have been asking Aarthi for along time to contribute some sketches to the Newsletter. Finally she has given me 12 sketches and 4 comics for publication in this issue. There are four contributors from the family - Kausalya, Nitya, Aarthi and I. I have kept aside Chinna chinna Asai as I've started writing my next book titled Romance of the Railways. I'm planning it in three volumes- each about 120 pages and each with a CD-ROM. I hope to publish Volume-I containing the chapters on History, Evolution, People, Fascinating Facts, Railways & Films and Miscellany in October 2007. So my article for this month is Railways and I which is my Preface to the book. Nitya has sent an interesting piece Google Sweet Google on her successful search in the net. I completely agree with her as I've written three books and a booklet entirely with Google's support. Aarthi's sketches are in two parts. Art by Aarthi - I has 12 sketches by her in pen,pencil, watercolour and sketchoens. Art by Aarthi - II has 4 comicstrips by her titled NERD & SURD. She calls them BAD COMICS, but they are very good. I am reproducing Kausalya's article Visionary zeal about the award-winning engineering unit managed and run by visually handicapped persons published in Sunday Magazine section of THe Hindu dated 19th August 2007.
The section 'FROM THE NET' contains Lesser known Heroes and heroines of India, ORIGIN OF SOME FAMOUS NAMES, INTERSTING NOTICES and two photo-albums,viz., NEW LANDMARKS IN CHENNAI IN 2010 and ART WITH WATERMELONS AND EGGS
All the other usual features, viz. Memories are made of these, Important family events, Crossword Clues and Cryptoquip are there. Brain Teasers this month has been replaced by a Report on the games played on Hema's 50th Birthday. Do not miss YOUNG AND OLD at the bottom of this page which has been made by me based on a forward that I received.
Enjoy the Newsletter, but do write about it.
The first feature, as
usual, are the old photos.
MEMORIES ARE MADE OF
My parents along with my brothers, their families and Urmila and Radha. This was in 1976 when Harish was one year old.

IMPORTANT EVENTS IN THE FAMILY
*** Kannan (T.Nagar) was hospitalised in Trinity Hospital , Chennai for a few days in August as he was feeling uneasy. I'd written to Prasad and Mukund,'Athai and I have been visiting the hospital from Monday every evening. We saw a steady improvement. I also met Dr. A.B.Srinivasan who advised hospitalisation. The doctor said that the dysentry your father had perhaps aggravated the sugar levels which also caused the low BP. He also said that exept for a slight problem in the nerves, he is fine. The only treatment for the problem is B12 injection that he's having. On Monday we saw your father in the hospital uniform (which was like a toga) and he was looking like a sick Julius Caesar. On Tuesday he was in dhoti and white shirt and was looking much better. Yesterday he was in dhoti and coloured shirt and was looking absolutely normal. He's also having his normal food now.'
He is now fully all right and has been to Bangalore from where he returned alone.
*** Archana's parents celebrated her Poochoottal (known by Iyers as Valaikaappu) on 24th August 2007 in their house in Adyar. This is a social function where all the ladies give flowers to her (hence Poo-choottal - wearing flowers). She is also given bangles by the ladies (Valai) as also a pair of thin silver bracelet (Kaappu) by her parents. Hence the name Valaikaappu. She and Harish left for Bangalore on 26th and will come for Seemandham. We saw three movies with Archana and Aarthi (and two with Harish who didn't come for Sivaji). We also played cards. Archana is fine. Some photos of the Poochoottal function are here.
*** Hema's 50th Birthday was celebrated in a grand manner by her brothers and sisters. Due to Kannan's sudden illness, he could not attend. As Santhanam was taking Kannan to the hospital, he came for a short time. Rukku came from Bangalore. Pushpa and Raghu could not attend, but Pushpa had agreed to have the get-together in her house. A report on the Games organised for the party is in Editor's Section. Some photos of the function are here.
*** Sriram (Shoba's son) is growing up well. Some latest photographs are here.
*** I'd written last time that Kannan and Santhanam are regularly performing the monthly rites of Jaya akka. I'd like to add that Raghu is also performing them regularly in Sydney.
*** Raghu's health is now normal and he has resumed his tours. He'll be visiting UK and USA shortly.
*** Ramesh went to USA for a week in August. Ramesh and his cousin have jointly purchased the house opposite Kannan's house in Adyar. They will start construction soon.
*** Again a house news. Kannan (T.Nagar) and Rukku are exchanging their houses in Bangalore and Chennai.
*** Aarthi came back here after completing her assignment in Bangalore. She is taking rest here, though she went for 4 days to Bangalore last week.
*** We saw four films in the last one month - 'Chak de India' in Hindi, Pallikkoodam, Sivaji and Kreedam in Tamil. Chak de India was very good, Kreedam and Pallikkoodam were good and Sivaji was so-so.
We were lucky to watch the French Open as well as Wimbledon in which many matches were excellent. While going through the Wimbledon website, I came across this gem. “Tennis was the royal game at court in Paris. (Real tennis = royal tennis, the original indoor version of tennis before lawn tennis). Hence, we now have the English versions of all the original French names....
Court = court in French
Tennis = tenez (take hold of or seize your weapon -- a tennis racquet in this case, also a French word)
Let = filet (French for net)
15, 30, 40 and game come from the quarter hours of the clock face - 40 being modified from 45 = quinze, trente, quarante-cinque, jeu. Jeu de paume was the old French handball game.
Deuce = deux -- the two points you need to win if the score is tied at 3 points each
Advantage = avantage
Service = service.”
