Dayananda Reddiar and Jeppiyar
When I was doing my degree course Vivekananda college, there was one famous commerce
professor by name Mr.Dayananda Reddy. His mother tongue was Telugu and he knew a little bit of tamil. But he was very good at teaching commerce. He was also vice principal of the college during my graduation period 1966-69. The college used to start at 10 AM and many students would be in the class around the first bell. But some of the rich guys who come by car and motor bike could be found in the verandah instead of going to their respective classes. Mr.Dayananda Reddy would directly translate the words from Tamil/Telugu to english.
Professor: 'Why are ROTATING the verandah instead going to your classes?'
This is the direct translation of : ஏன் வராண்டாவை சுத்தறீங்க?
Some of the students were standing beneath the staircase where old furniture was stored. In that place some six or seven students were standing and gossiping. His class was nearby and he could not tolerate the sound of the students and in anger he said:
"Why are you understanding the stairs? Go to your classes."
There are similar stories about Jeppiyar who has set up Engineering and Medical colleges. I am reproducing below some of the statements attributed to Jeppiyar.
